Louisiana offers CAHIIM-accredited health information management (HIM) degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s levels, plus a candidacy-stage online master’s at Xavier and a research-oriented biomedical informatics MS at Tulane. No Louisiana school currently offers a nursing informatics master’s.
Louisiana Tech stands out with accredited programs at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels, all available online. UL Lafayette and Southern University at New Orleans also lead to the RHIA, and Southern University at Shreveport leads to the RHIT.

Which Louisiana Program May Fit You Best?
For an Accredited Online Master’s
Louisiana Tech‘s Master of Health Informatics is CAHIIM-accredited, fully online and asynchronous, and costs about $18,500 for any student. Students can start with its four-course graduate certificate and apply the credits toward the degree.
For Specialized or Technical Study
Xavier‘s online MS offers population health, clinical, and bioinformatics concentrations but is still in CAHIIM candidacy. Tulane‘s medical-school MS focuses on machine learning and genomic data and ends in a thesis. UL Lafayette‘s online MS in Informatics is a general degree with a health concentration.
For the RHIA
Three bachelor’s programs lead to the RHIA. UL Lafayette’s campus program reports a 94% first-time pass rate for 2024 graduates. Louisiana Tech’s can be taken online or on campus with a final practice quarter, and Southern University at New Orleans is 100% online at one rate for every state.
For the RHIT
Southern University at Shreveport‘s hybrid associate degree admits up to 15 students a year and assigns two 90-hour practice experiences near each student’s home.
Programs in Transition
- River Parishes Community College: its new HIT associate degree had a CAHIIM site visit in June 2026 but is not yet accredited.
- Delgado Community College: CAHIIM lists its HIT associate degree as inactive, although the college’s pages still describe the program.
- Tulane University: plans an MS in Data Modeling and Analytics for Health, starting in fall 2027.
How to Compare Louisiana Health Informatics Degrees
Check Accreditation Status Carefully
Several Louisiana program pages show outdated accreditation dates, and Xavier’s candidacy is not the same as accreditation. CAHIIM’s directory is the reliable source for current status.
Weigh Applied Experience
The HIM bachelor’s programs include substantial practice: UL Lafayette has 10 credits of practice and internship, and Louisiana Tech spends the final quarter at practice sites. The master’s programs end in capstones or theses instead.
Compare Online Pricing
Louisiana Tech, UL Lafayette, and SUNO charge online students one rate regardless of state, so out-of-state students pay the same as Louisianans for online study.
