Graduate Certificate in Clinical Informatics
The estimated tuition for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Informatics at Indiana University Indianapolis is approximately $6,458 for Indiana residents (15 credits at $430.50/credit) and $9,686 for nonresidents (15 credits at $645.75/credit).
The program can generally be completed in about one year.
IU describes the certificate as a one-year program. Five 3-credit courses fit two semesters at 9 and 6 credits; that split is our estimate, not a published plan of study.
Certificate Curriculum
Two required courses cover health informatics foundations and data standards. The other nine credits are your choice from six electives, so the certificate can lean toward management (project management, social foundations) or toward technical systems (NLP, decision support).

- INFO-B 581 Health Informatics Standards and Terminology (3 cr., required)
- INFO-B 505 Informatics Project Management (3 cr.)
- INFO-B 535 Clinical Information Systems (3 cr.)
- INFO-B 605 Social Foundations of Informatics (3 cr.)

You Should Know
- Students must keep a 3.0 cumulative GPA and earn a B- or better in every course.
- INFO-B 530, 535, and 581 are also core courses in IU Indianapolis’s 36-credit MS in Health Informatics. IU does not state on the certificate pages whether certificate credits transfer into the master’s.
Certificate Practicum and Capstone
- The 2026-27 bulletin and the Luddy program page list no practicum or capstone.
- Through 2024-25, the certificate was 18 credits and included INFO-B 584 Practicum in Health Information Technology.
The practicum’s removal makes the certificate shorter and fully remote, but it also means no supervised project in a health care setting. Students who want applied experience on a résumé will need to get it through their job.
You Should Know
- ⚠️ The IU Online program page still lists 18 credits and a 3-credit mentored practicum. The 2026-27 bulletin (updated May 2026) and the Luddy School page both list 15 credits with no practicum. The bulletin governs degree requirements, so this profile uses 15.
Certificate Admissions
Admission is open to non-clinicians; no RN license or clinical experience is required.
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Undergraduate GPA of 3.0, or equivalent with relevant graduate coursework
- Transcripts, a 500–750 word personal statement, and a resume
- TOEFL or IELTS for applicants whose degrees are from non-English-speaking countries
- $70 application fee
- Deadlines: July 1 for fall, November 1 for spring
Tuition
IU Indianapolis charges this certificate $430.50 per credit for Indiana residents and $645.75 per credit for nonresidents under IU’s approved 2026-27 distance education rates for informatics graduate programs and certificates.
| Residency | Rate per Credit | Credits | Est. Tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indiana resident | $430.50 | 15 | $6,457.50 |
| Nonresident (online rate) | $645.75 | 15 | $9,686.25 |
Confirmed costs:
- Tuition: $430.50/credit resident, $645.75/credit nonresident (2026-27 distance education schedule)
- Application fee: $70
- Graduate Online Student Services fee: $40, listed in the same distance education schedule
Be aware that:
- The Luddy School’s cost page lists $1,201.50 per credit for out-of-state graduate students, which would put this certificate at about $18,023. That figure is the general campus rate. IU’s budget office sets a separate $645.75 nonresident rate for online informatics graduate programs and certificates, so this profile uses it. Confirm your billing rate with the IU Tuition and Fee Estimator.
- The $40 online student services fee may be assessed per credit hour. If so, it adds about $600 over 15 credits.
- IU Online states this program is not eligible for financial aid.
All-in, an Indiana resident should budget roughly $6,500 to $7,100, and a nonresident roughly $9,700 to $10,300, before books. With no aid eligibility, the full amount is out of pocket or employer-funded. See IU’s cost of attendance page and master fee list for current rates.
Why Choose This Clinical Informatics Program?
The right applicant is a working clinician or health IT professional who wants a recognized university credential in informatics without committing to a master’s degree.
Low cost, low commitment. Five courses, no practicum, and no campus visits keep the time and travel commitment small. Even nonresidents pay under $10,000 in tuition at the online rate.
Elective flexibility. With three electives from six, a nurse moving into EHR optimization and an IT analyst moving toward decision support can build noticeably different certificates.
The trade-offs. No practicum means no applied project. No financial aid eligibility means employer reimbursement matters. And a certificate alone does not satisfy the education requirement for AMIA’s AHIC credential.
Accreditation
The certificate is offered by the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at IU Indianapolis. IU does not cite CAHIIM or other programmatic accreditation for it, and no nursing accreditor applies because it is not a nursing credential.
Indiana University is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
For certification, AMIA’s AHIC requires a degree in health informatics or a related field plus qualifying experience, with the amount of experience set by degree level. A graduate certificate is not a degree, so it does not meet that requirement by itself. The ANCC informatics nursing credential requires an RN license. The ABPM Clinical Informatics board requires an ACGME fellowship, so this certificate does not confer physician board eligibility.
