Michigan Health Informatics Degree Programs

Michigan offers health informatics and health information management (HIM) programs at every level, from fully online HIM bachelor’s degrees to a residential master’s at the University of Michigan. The graduate options differ sharply in format and cost: a campus-only Ann Arbor degree, two programs that charge one rate in every state, and an online HIM master’s that leads to the RHIA credential.

Before choosing, decide which career track you want. Health informatics degrees prepare students for data, analytics, and systems roles. HIM degrees prepare students for coding, compliance, and records leadership, usually with the RHIA credential.

Which Michigan Program May Fit You Best?

For a Full-Time, Research-University Degree

The University of Michigan Master of Health Informatics is a 45-credit residential program run by the Schools of Information and Public Health and the Medical School. Programming is part of the core, and most students complete a self-arranged paid internship the summer between years. It is the most expensive option, but scholarships covering tuition and fees are available.

For AI and Technical Depth Online

Michigan Tech builds its 30-credit MS from stackable certificates in foundations, AI in health care, security and privacy, and public health informatics. It charges one rate in every state and runs the same curriculum online and on campus.

For Built-In Work Experience

Grand Valley State‘s MS is a Professional Science Master’s that requires an internship with a sponsoring employer. Students choose a health informatics or bioinformatics track and can study online, hybrid, or in evening classes in downtown Grand Rapids.

For the RHIA Credential

Davenport University‘s online MS is accredited by CAHIIM as an HIM master’s, so graduates can sit for the RHIA exam without an HIM bachelor’s. At the bachelor’s level, Davenport, Ferris State, and Grand Valley State all offer CAHIIM-accredited HIM degrees. Ferris requires the most supervised practice, with two full-time placements.

Other Michigan Options

  • University of Michigan-Flint: an online BS in Health Informatics and Information Management, in CAHIIM candidacy status, whose first class graduated in 2026; and a 13-credit hybrid graduate certificate in Health Data Analytics.
  • Baker College: an online, 120-credit BS in Health Information Management, plus a CAHIIM-accredited associate degree in Health Information Technology.

Western Michigan University’s former Health Informatics and Information Management bachelor’s suspended admission by 2020-21 and no longer appears in its catalog.

How to Compare Michigan Health Informatics Degrees

Check What the Degree Qualifies You For

RHIA eligibility requires a CAHIIM-accredited HIM program. Davenport’s MS and the HIM bachelor’s degrees at Davenport, Ferris State, and Grand Valley State qualify. The health informatics master’s degrees at Michigan, Michigan Tech, and Grand Valley State do not claim CAHIIM accreditation and do not lead to RHIA, though they fit AMIA’s Health Informatics Certification once graduates have enough work experience.

Compare Format and Residency Pricing

Michigan Tech, Grand Valley State, and Ferris State charge the same rate regardless of state, and Davenport discounts online undergraduate tuition for non-Michigan residents. The University of Michigan is the only program here that requires full-time residence in Ann Arbor and charges much more to non-residents.

Plan for Experience

Grand Valley’s MS requires an internship, and Michigan’s encourages one. Michigan Tech’s and Davenport’s master’s do not require a placement, so students without health care or IT jobs should arrange their own experience.
