MS Curriculum
The 18-credit core mixes information science, health services, and the Medical School’s learning health systems courses. Students then pick 9 credits of foundational methods and 9 of advanced methods from long lists, add 6 elective credits, and finish with a mastery course.
- SI 500 Problem-Solving with People, Information, and Technology (3)
- SI 506 Programming I (3)
- HMP 600 The Health Services System (3)
- HMP 668 Introduction to Health Informatics (3)
- LHS 650 Introduction to Health Infrastructure (3)
- LHS 660 Evaluation Methods in Health Informatics and Learning Systems (3)
- Foundational methods, 9 credits (e.g., SI 618, BIOSTAT 601, HMP 669)
- Advanced methods, 9 credits (e.g., SI 670, LHS 712, BIOSTAT 626)
- Graduate electives (6)
- SI 699 MHI Mastery Course (3)

You Should Know
- Course waivers are possible, but they do not reduce the 45 required credits.
- The core and foundational methods must be finished before the mastery course.
MS Practicum and Capstone
- Internship: optional, up to 9 credits through the School of Information internship program.
- Timing: most students intern the summer between years one and two.
- Placement: students choose and secure their own internship using the school’s career office and job board.
- Approval: the role must relate to coursework and have a supervisor with three or more years of experience.
- Capstone: SI 699 MHI Mastery Course (3).
The internship is optional on paper, but it is the program’s main source of work experience, and the school reports a $24 per hour average internship wage (2024 report). Students who skip it graduate with coursework only, which weakens both job searches and later AHIC eligibility.
MS Admissions
The program accepts any bachelor’s degree and lists no prerequisites, though basic statistics and programming review is recommended.
- Bachelor’s degree; 3.0 GPA preferred, with some admits below 3.0.
- RN license or clinical experience: not required.
- No GRE.
- Resume, 1–2 page personal statement, three short-answer essays, three recommendations.
- Application fee $75 ($90 international).
- Fall start only. Priority deadline January 15 (scholarship consideration); final deadline May 1.
- International students receive F-1 visa instructions with admission.
Tuition
Michigan charges a flat Health Informatics rate per full-time term rather than per credit. Spread over 45 credits, that works out to about $1,649 per credit in-state and $2,723 out-of-state (derived).
| Component (2025-26) | In-State | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time tuition per term (9+ credits) | $18,550 | $30,632 |
| Part-time: first credit / each added credit | $2,426 / $2,015 | $3,769 / $3,358 |
| Mandatory fees per term | $241.19 | $241.19 |
| Four full-time terms with fees | About $75,200 | About $123,500 |
- Rates from the program’s tuition page and the Registrar’s 2025-26 fee bulletin; both agree.
- The Health Informatics rate is higher than the School of Information’s general master’s rate.
Be aware that:
- These are 2025-26 rates. The 2026-27 bulletin was not readable when this profile was written, so expect somewhat higher figures.
- The fee bulletin also mentions infrastructure and health service charges without amounts.
- Ann Arbor living costs for two years are not included and are substantial for a residential program.
- Funding exists: a Go Blue Graduate Scholarship covering four semesters of tuition and fees, a Health Informatics Achievement Fellowship with a stipend, up to $10,000 in matching funds for external scholars, and emergency grants up to $2,500.
The out-of-state sticker price is high, so apply by the January 15 priority deadline to be considered for scholarships before comparing costs.
Why Choose This Health Informatics Program?
The right choice for students who can study full time in Ann Arbor and want a broad, technical degree tied to a large academic medical center.
Credential value. The degree draws on three schools, and the course lists reach into biostatistics, machine learning, and health infrastructure. A paid summer internship adds the experience employers look for.
The trade-offs. There is no online or part-time route for working professionals, and the full price for non-residents is high unless scholarships come through.
Related options. U-M undergraduates in Public Health can apply to a 30-credit accelerated version, and U-M graduate students can add a health informatics certificate. Neither is open to outside applicants.
Accreditation
The MHI’s pages make no claim of CAHIIM accreditation, and none is assumed here.
The University of Michigan is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
A master’s in health informatics from an accredited university fits Track 1 of the AMIA Health Informatics Certification, which also requires 4 years of informatics work in the past 6 at 50% or more of work time (or 6 of 8 years at 20–49%).
