Kentucky Health Informatics Degree Programs

Kentucky has one online health informatics master’s, two CAHIIM-accredited health information management (HIM) bachelor’s degrees, and two accredited HIM associate degrees. Every program on this page can be taken largely online, and Kentucky has no nursing informatics master’s.

Northern Kentucky University offers the state’s master’s. Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky both lead to the RHIA, while Jefferson Community and Technical College and Sullivan University lead to the RHIT.

Which Kentucky Program May Fit You Best?

For a Fast Online Master’s

Northern Kentucky University‘s MS runs in 7-week online courses, can be finished in about 12 months, and costs about $21,000 for any student. Its core includes systems analysis, databases, and IT project management. It is not CAHIIM-accredited and has a capstone rather than a practicum.

For the RHIA

Eastern Kentucky University‘s HIIM concentration runs online in 7-week terms with six starts a year and reports an 84% RHIA pass rate. Western Kentucky University‘s online BS in HIM has a Plus 2 path that lets RHITs finish a bachelor’s without starting over.

For the RHIT

Jefferson Community and Technical College is the low-cost option, with remote classes, practice in Louisville, and a 100% RHIT pass rate in 2024 and 2025. Sullivan University is fully online on a year-round quarter calendar but costs several times as much.

For Health Data Science and Research

The University of Louisville’s online MS in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine requires statistics and programming coursework. The University of Kentucky’s new PhD in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science is a campus research degree in the College of Medicine.

Programs That Have Closed or Changed

  • University of Louisville: its MS in Health Data Analytics closed to new students in 2025.
  • Gateway Community and Technical College: its HIT associate degree is inactive and no longer accepting new students; coding and release-of-information certificates remain.
  • Hazard Community and Technical College: its HIT associate degree no longer appears in the 2026-27 catalog.
  • Northern Kentucky University: current program listings show a health informatics minor and the master’s, but no bachelor’s.

How to Compare Kentucky Health Informatics Degrees

Pick the Credential First

The RHIT requires a CAHIIM-accredited associate degree and the RHIA a CAHIIM-accredited HIM bachelor’s or master’s. NKU’s master’s prepares students for informatics and analyst roles but does not lead to either.

Compare Online Rates

NKU, EKU, and WKU all charge online students one rate regardless of state, so out-of-state students pay the same as Kentuckians. Community college online courses are $198 per credit for any residency plus a distance fee.

Plan the Placement

The HIM bachelor’s and associate degrees all require supervised practice at a health care facility, which online students may need to complete away from home. NKU’s master’s has none.
