Which Maryland Program May Fit You Best?
For the RHIA
Coppin State‘s CAHIIM-accredited BS costs Maryland residents $221 per credit and includes two RHIA preparation courses.
For an Online Master’s at Public Rates
UMGC‘s 36-credit online master’s costs about $20,000 in-state, with a $336 military rate. Hood College offers a data-heavy alternative with four start terms a year.
For Clinicians
Johns Hopkins offers its applied master’s online or in a 12-month campus format, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore offers an online clinical informatics MS built from two stackable certificates.
For Registered Nurses
The University of Maryland School of Nursing‘s online MSN includes 500 practicum hours, and associate-degree RNs can enter through an RN-to-MSN pathway.
For an Associate Degree
The Community College of Baltimore County offers its CAHIIM-accredited associate degree online or in Catonsville and reports a 100% RHIT pass rate for 2023-24, plus a 41-credit medical coding certificate. CAHIIM also lists active associate degrees at Montgomery College, Prince George’s Community College, Baltimore City Community College, and the College of Southern Maryland.
How to Compare Maryland Health Informatics Programs
Decide which credential you need first: the RHIA (Coppin’s BS), an accredited informatics or HIM master’s (Hopkins, UMGC), or a nursing informatics MSN (UMSON). Then compare residency rules, since out-of-state tuition at Coppin and UMSON runs far above the in-state rate, while UMGC’s rates differ by about $100 per credit and Hopkins charges everyone the same.
