More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- Up to four foundational courses (database design, information security, clinical vocabulary, statistics) may be required on top of the 33 credits. At $1,148 each credit, that can add up to $13,776 (our estimate for 12 credits).
- Undergraduate medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology and pharmacology are required before the final semester.
- Courses are described as seven-week sessions, but the catalog marks two data courses as 15 weeks.
- Students who finish two more data analytics courses can also earn Davenport’s Data Analytics graduate certificate.
MS Practicum and Capstone
- No practicum or professional practice experience is listed for the MS.
- HINT 799 Capstone (3): the program page describes a thesis or a project from the student’s current job.
- At least 30 credits, including the capstone, must be taken at Davenport.
A job-based capstone works well for students already in health care. Career changers get RHIA eligibility but no supervised placement, so they should seek coding or HIM work while studying.
MS Admissions
The GPA floor is lower than at many graduate programs, and prior HIM training is not required.
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution; GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Prior coursework in management, technology, and statistics.
- Resume and 500-word statement of purpose; an interview may be required.
- No GRE, RHIT/RHIA, or work experience required. RN license: not required.
- Criminal background check and drug screen.
- Start terms and deadlines are not published; the recommended sequence is a fall start.

Why Choose This Health Informatics Program?
Most valuable for adults who want the RHIA credential and HIM leadership roles without returning for a second bachelor’s.
Credential value. CAHIIM accreditation as an HIM master’s is what makes RHIA eligibility possible, and that credential is often required for HIM director and compliance roles.
Pathways for every starting point. RHITs can finish a bachelor’s in about a year, high school graduates can plan a five-year BS/MS, and bachelor’s holders in other fields can go straight to the MS.
The limits. Graduate tuition is high per credit, there is no supervised practicum in the MS, and the curriculum has little programming or data science.
Accreditation
Davenport states that its HIM master’s, bachelor’s, and associate programs are accredited by CAHIIM: the master’s reaffirmed through 2028 and the bachelor’s through 2029-30.
Davenport University is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Graduates of the MS and BS are eligible to sit for AHIMA’s RHIA exam. The MS also fits Track 1 of the AMIA Health Informatics Certification, which additionally requires 4 years of informatics work in the past 6 at 50% or more of work time.
