Which North Carolina Program May Fit You Best?

For an Accredited Program

ECU‘s CAHIIM-accredited master’s costs North Carolina residents about $10,800 and ends with an internship at a North Carolina facility; its HIM bachelor’s leads to the RHIA, and community college HIT graduates may enter as juniors.

For Analytics and Data Science

UNCG‘s online master’s adds a health concentration to a machine learning and visualization core at public tuition, and UNC Charlotte offers population health or AI and data science concentrations with evening classes.

For Internship Experience or Leadership

UNC Chapel Hill‘s professional master’s requires an internship of at least 400 hours, with a one-year fast track. Wake Forest‘s online master’s covers digital health and leadership, and Duke‘s hybrid MMCi pairs clinical informatics with business courses.

For the RHIT

CAHIIM lists active associate programs at Brunswick Community College, Catawba Valley Community College, Central Carolina Community College, Craven Community College, Davidson-Davie Community College, Edgecombe Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, McDowell Technical Community College, Pitt Community College, and Southwestern Community College.

For Nurses

We found no North Carolina nursing informatics MSN currently accepting applications. Nurses who already hold an MSN can take Queens University of Charlotte’s 12-credit online informatics certificate; others can see the nursing informatics directory for online MSN programs.

Programs in Transition

  • Duke University School of Nursing: its Health Informatics MSN specialty is not currently accepting applications.
  • East Carolina University: its HIM post-baccalaureate certificate is being discontinued and no longer accepts applications.
  • UNC Charlotte: its MS in Health Informatics and Analytics now appears as a 30-credit MS in Data Science and Health Analytics, though some department pages still describe the 36-credit program.

How to Compare North Carolina Health Informatics Programs

Residency drives cost: ECU, UNCG, UNC Charlotte, and UNC Chapel Hill all charge nonresidents two to four times the in-state rate, while Wake Forest and Duke charge one rate. ECU’s are the only university programs here with CAHIIM accreditation, and UNC Chapel Hill’s is the only master’s listed here that requires a set number of internship hours.
